ARTIST STATEMENT

Like no other country, the Dutch are masters of zoning. We cultivate and organise the landscape.
Likewise, the Dutch landscape changes it's inhabitants. They have to deal with the kind of landscape they created.
Climbing the windy dikes on their bikes. A strict land use zoning creates an efficient blocked rural landscape for straight biking lanes and ideal walking paths.
New towns are injected with nostalgia through traditional facades and old fashioned street names. Old towns relive with young, modern families.
Shopping areas are logically and cost efficient constructed with recognizable street furniture and company banners.
Unwanted behavior in the public domain is channeled and monitored with graffiti or poster walls and aluminum anti-peeing strips.

It's the constructed landscape versus the free Dutch mindset that make a truly interesting playground.
Are we still in charge of our own urbanization acts or does our drive for efficiency blind our view of a more liveable place?
It's questions like these that make the social engineering perspective an important theme in his body of work.

___________

Patrick van Vliet (1981) studied Urban Planning at the University of Utrecht. After university, he worked as an urban planner.
Although the field of interest stayed the same, Patrick's focus shifted towards a more creative approach of urban redevelopment and social geography.
A more abstract approach by using arts seems a logic tool to communicate ideas on these issues.
Through the years, he developed as a versatile artist who didn't limit himself to paint or charcoal.
Video, photography and concept development became important elements in his work.

___________

ANALOG

Patrick's paintings & drawings have evolved from pop surrealistic, psychedelic imagery to a Dutch social realism in which his background as an urban planner has become more explicit.
He incorporates social annoyances and public degeneration from day to day life in his images. These images seem familiar but alienate.
Alienation by disrupting the familiar with uncanny elements and deviant colors.

Photos are indispensable for Patrick's paintings and drawings. He uses them a lot. Very often they're reason to start doodling.
An achrive with selfmade and found photos is the basis of most of his works. In the photo section of the 'work' section you can find a selection of the imagery that he uses.

___________

DIGITAL

Some ideas that started at the drawing table are better off digitalized. As an art director, the social aspect stays important. Patrick searches for a personal angle.
The way a person writes. Typical nervous twitches. The handling of a machine. Moments of social contact. Moments of no social contact.
The personal aspects defines the look & feel of a video and makes it that more interesting.
